How to bring a Jackfruit on a Plane

Today’s post is a guest post from my traveling amigo Paul Sobczak, one of the most intrepidly unique people I know. I can say with some certainty that some of the strangest things I have received in the mail, was sent by Paul. A few years ago, I wrote about Paul’s I Can Eat Glass and It Doesn’t Hurt Me project on The Expeditioner. Today, Paul tells us how to bring a jackfruit on a plane.

How To Bring A Jackfruit on Plane

If you ever find yourself needing to transport a Jackfruit from Los Angeles to Minneapolis in your carry on this is how you can do it.

Jackfruit is my favorite fruit on planet earth. You can find it all over Southeast Asia, but it’s not as easy as going into a 7 Eleven and asking politely. You have to be at the right place at the right time to get this wonderful treat on the streets, which is where I first encountered it in Hong Kong. I further chased after this dream treat in Thailand attempting to get closer and closer to the source. When I got too close, I was scared off at knife point. I imagine making contact with a good Jackfruit dealer I in Asia could take years. After all of that, you are still stuck in Asia with a Jackfruit, which is inconvenient if you want it to be in Minneapolis for a party.

It’s not easy to get Jackfruit in America, whenever you want. Enter Mexico! Que Buena Suerte! Now you can have all the Jackfruit I want in America I discovered when I saw one in an Asian Super market.

So I sourced a Jackfruit and I was headed to Minneapolis to share the bounty with good friends, surely I must use my checked bag, but that will cost an extra $25 and I already paid ~$30 for the Jack, so I guess it’s going to be carryon.

Lets take a look at the TSA website to see what is allowed:

Food is allowed and “Food must be wrapped or in a container. Unpeeled natural foods like fruit are okay, but half-eaten fruits must be wrapped.”

I was lucky enough to purchase a Jack just small enough to fit in my bag. If you try this you need to be careful, there might not be weight restrictions for carry-on luggage but there are size restrictions. Check your favorite Airline for details.Jack Fruit in Cart

Here is the Jack  inside my backpack on the Airport Security X-Ray System, nobody said nothing!
